Myth-Busting

The Truth Behind the Tales

Whisky is a world full of stories—but not all of them are true. Our Myth Busting section shines a light on the most common misconceptions in the whisky community, from who “should” drink it to what actually defines quality. We unravel these myths with clarity, culture, and science, helping you explore whisky with confidence, curiosity, and an open palate.

whisky myths bar.png.jpeg

Irish whiskey's smoothness is craft, not curse—triple distillation amplifies fruit, spice, and pot still depth without harshness, yielding elegant complexity. The myth of "velvet blandness" (lacking Scotch peat or rye kick) arose from 19th-century stereotypes and mass-appeal marketing.

Irish whiskey is smooth and boring!

The older the whisk(e)y, the better it is!

Age is a tool, not a trophy - This enduring myth equates age with superiority, assuming longer oak maturation always yields deeper, more refined flavors—like a fine wine. It's perpetuated by prestige labels (e.g., "21-Year") and collector hype, but in reality, aging enhances complexity only up to a point; beyond that, it risks over-extraction, flatness, or imbalance.

All bourbon are from Kentucky!

Bourbon's soul lies in corn and char, not state lines. This myth sticks like barrel residue—Kentucky's heritage and 95% production create an exclusive aura. But bourbon is recipe-defined, not place-bound: any U.S. spirit with 51%+ corn, distilled under 160 proof, and aged in new charred oak qualifies, per 1964 federal law. In 2025, 2,000+ distilleries across 30+ states craft exceptional pours. It's mashbill and char that matter, not geography.

This persistent whisk(e)y myth stems from visual bias—our brains link deep amber to "aged luxury" (like cognac)—and marketing's mahogany showcases. It spans all styles, from Scotch and Bourbon to Irish, Japanese, Canadian, and Indian. In truth, color is a superficial indicator shaped by cask type, additives, and climate—not quality or maturity.

Darker color means higher quality or age!

Japanese whisky is a Scotch copycat!

Japanese whisky honors Scotch roots but innovates boldly—Mizunara oak's incense/sandalwood and humid floral subtlety create a unique elegance. The "copycat" myth ignores pioneers like Taketsuru, who studied Scotch yet forged precise blending and domestic mastery. 2021 regulations mandate 100% Japan-aged production,

Whisk(e)y MUST be drunk NEAT!

Dilution with water or ice enhances flavors (e.g., opens vanilla notes); even experts chill or mix high-proof pours—personal preference rules, not purism.

Whiskey's magic is universal—no velvet rope. This outdated stereotype casts it as an elite, masculine pursuit—tweed jackets, cigars, boardrooms—fueled by 1950s executive ads and Bond's tuxedo sips. It gatekeeps, suggesting it's "not for" youth, women, workers, or casuals. In truth, whiskey is global joy for all ages, genders, classes, and vibes, about personal flavors, not demographics.

To drink whisk(e)y you must look like this!
